We are excited to tell you about a new venture that we are embarking on as a whole school which will involve teaching about values. Our values are right at the heart of who we are, driving what we do and how we do it. We have always prided ourselves on being a caring school with a positive atmosphere and many visitors to the school have remarked upon this. Values education seeks to make explicit what is happening implicitly. It provides a structure for understanding the way we behave so that everyone is clear about the way we should act and behave. By introducing Values education, we will be helping the children to better understand a range of basic values such as respect, co-operation, care, honesty and love and in doing so, preparing them for the world of the future.
Values education is not something entirely new for us, we have always worked in collaboration with parents/carers, (the children’s main educators), in teaching the children how to be responsible, make good choices and be the very best that they can be, ensuring they get the most out of every aspect of school life. We are sure that you will be pleased that your children will be thinking and learning about how to put these values into their lives, empowering them to take responsibility and making the right choices to face whatever school and the wider world throws at them.
The staff have all had training in Values Based Education at our recent training day and are keen to start this journey – but we can’t do it without your help! We would like to gather the thoughts and suggestions of our whole school community including governors, parents/carers, the whole staff team and of course the children themselves. To do this we would appreciate it if you would complete a simple questionnaire. This should only take a few minutes and in most cases all you have to do is draw a circle around your chosen response. We will use the responses to generate a list of values that are pertinent for our school.
We will be selecting 22 values that will be taught over a two year cycle. We will focus on one specific value each month and you will be able to access the ‘This Month’s Value’ newsletter on the website that you can share at home with your child. In school the children will have a values assembly where they will listen to stories and discuss what each value means and in addition to this they will also have a special values lesson in their classroom each month to allow for smaller group discussion.
We hope that this will continue at home and that you will inform us, through the pupil planners, of things your child has done or said to demonstrate the values. We will celebrate these successes in assemblies and as part of our class values lessons each month so please nominate your child through their planner whenever you see them demonstrating these values at home. Our pupil ‘Values Champions’ will also be keeping an eye out around school and nominating children for ‘Values’ awards.
We hope that you will support us with this initiative and welcome your input via the attached questionnaire. Once we have collated all of our responses we will send you details of the monthly values that have been chosen.
If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to ask
Many thanks for your continued support
