Fabulous Friday French!

In today’s lesson we started by doing an activity which involved guessing some French cities.  We went through the answers together, listening to people’s suggestions and then went on to watch a slideshow about the French chateau at Versailles, whilst listening to the French song ‘Cezanne Peint’ by the French singer, ‘France Gall’.  After that, we discussed common features of this chateau and talked about the famous French painter ‘Paul Cezanne’. 

Next, we went through the learning challenges that Lucy, Elissa, Demi and Joe read out to the class.  Cyrennah said the date for today in French and Will said the date in French for tomorrow.  We checked for anyone’s birthday, after which we performed the traditional French finger rhyme ‘Les Saisons’ going through the sounds in the rhyme.  Lucy then read an extract from the authentic French storybook ‘Au Loup!’ and we performed the actions to show that we understood her.  We all thought it was fantastic and we congratulated her with a big round of applause!  Following this, we then practised saying the time on the hour and half-hour in French and tested our partners.  Amelia and Cody, Harrison and Mia, Isobella and Anthony and Jack and Demi stood up and demonstrated this to the class. 

We did our dictation exercise next on our mini whiteboards, listening to Madame Underwood and writing down in French what she said.  We  marked our work and saw that Lucy had no errors on the first sentence and just one error on the second one.  We saw that Cyrennah had no errors on all three!  Finally, we saw how people felt about their learning by using the red, yellow and green cards.  we then said goodbye in French to Madame Underwood.

In today’s lesson Madame Underwood asked us what was so special about Versailles, France and Lily-May reminded us that the negotiations which ended World War 1 with the Treaty of Versailles took place there.  Next, we read the learning challenges (Les Defis Savoirs) for example, can I read words containing the diagraphs ez and er when they sound like e as in the words nez, rocher and elephant?  The skills we would be developing with this learning challenge were knowledge about the language (KAL), literacy and oracy.  We then moved on to the date for today.  Madame Underwood asked whose birthday it was - it was Jasmyn’s birthday so we sang 'Happy Birthday' in French for her. 

After that, we performed a traditional French finger rhyme about the seasons ‘Les Saisons’.  Then, Ameera and Lily-May read the authentic French storybook ‘Qui Conduit?’ aloud to the rest of the class whilst Madame Underwood videoed them.  They both read very well and read it with lots of expression!  We all then sang the chorus of the traditional French song ‘Loup, Loup Y Es-Tu?

Next, we practised the time on the hour and half-hour.  Krish and Hannah knew their time and lots of other people volunteered answers.  we practised with our partners then Inaya and Aimee asked each other the time in French in front of the whole class - they did so well - as did Annie and Ava, Ciara and Emma and Tilly and Logan.  Finally, we rhymed French animals with French cities, for example, le cameleon rhymes with Roussillon. Then we got our traffic light cards out to show how we felt about our learning and returned to the learning challenges.

In today’s French lesson we started with doing an activity where we had to guess the French city.  Doing this prep before the lesson helped the students to learn the different cities in France!  We went through the answers and then went on to watch a slideshow about the French chateau at Versailles that we are studying in class whilst listening to the French song ‘Cezanne Peint’ by the French singer, 'France Gall'.  After the slideshow ended we discussed the features of the chateau. We also discussed the famous French painter ‘Edouard Manet’Then we listened to Ethan and Lucy ask their own questions about French cities for people to answer. 

After that, Lucy, Elissa and Joe read out our learning challenges. Then Cyrennah said what the date for today was in French and Will said the French date for tomorrow.  We then went through birthdays and if it was someone’s birthday we sang 'Happy Birthday' to them in French.  After that we performed a traditional French finger rhyme about the seasons and went through the sounds in the rhyme.  Next, we listened to Lucy read aloud the authentic French story ‘Au loup!’ - we performed the  actions to show we understood her.  We all thought it was great! 

We then recalled how to say the time in French.  We got the clocks out and tested our partners for 2-3 minutes.  After, people stood up and asked other people questions: Cody, Amelia, Harrison, Mia and some others demonstrated in front of the class.  The next activity was a dictation exercise: in order to get the answer right we had to use our skills of sounds to spell words correctly.  When we completed a sentence, we went over it with Madame Underwood.  We had three sentences to write.  At the end of the lesson we went through our learning challenges and held up our coloured cards to show how we felt about our learning.

At the beginning of today’s French lesson, Madame Underwood asked the class why the chateau at Versailles was so famous.  Ciara reminded us that the negotiations which ended World War 1 by the Treaty of Versailles took place there.  Then the class looked at the learning challenges.  People in the class said the date for today in French (vendredi 2 fevrier), the date for yesterday and the date for tomorrow.  Then we sang happy birthday to Jasmyn.  Ameera and Lily-May read aloud the traditional French storybook ‘Qui Conduit’ to the rest of the class. 

Next, Hannah, Krish and Kieran practised their knowledge of time (in French).  Then we all practised the time with our partners.  Ciara and Emma asked each other what the time was that they had made on their clocks.  This activity then carried on in the same way with other children.  We then practised our rhyming words by putting an animal and a city together in a sentence.  Matthew started us off and then more people carried on. 

At the end of the lesson, Madame Underwood asked the class how they felt about today’s learning challenges.
